Streetline Unveils Sound Level and Surface Temperature Sensing; Advances "Internet of Things" Vision for Cities
Streetline to leverage its sensor-enabled smart parking platform as a foundation for additional smart city use cases
FOSTER CITY, Calif., Jan. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Streetline, Inc., a global provider of smart parking solutions, today unveiled plans to further extend its sensing capabilities to include sound level and road surface temperature as a next step towards advancing smart cities and the "Internet of Things". Streetline customers will soon be able to capture real-time sound level and temperature data in areas where the Streetline network is deployed – without the need for additional hardware or network infrastructure. With the addition of this new sensing capability, cities will have the ability to further expand the use of real-time and historical data to better manage city resources and respond to community and environmental needs. Streetline also continues to explore other high ROI sensor-enabled smart city use cases to integrate into its platform – sourced both internally and through partners.
According to New York City's 2013 Mayor's Management Report, noise issues are among the most frequent complaints handled by the 311 (non-emergency) systems in many major cities. Using advanced sensing technology, cities can now tap the power of the "Internet of Things" to continually survey and analyze sound levels across a city to ensure compliance with noise ordinances and better evaluate consistent noise complaints from residents and merchants that may need to be addressed.
By monitoring real-time temperature data, cities can more effectively deploy city resources in order to enrich and improve the urban environment. Because road surface temperature and air temperature are not typically the same, advanced sensing technology can help to proactively determine when salting trucks or snow removal equipment should be deployed or where tree planting can help with greening initiatives to reduce a city's carbon footprint, reduce energy used by nearby buildings, lower summer air temperature to combat the urban heat island effect, or improve air and water quality.
Streetline's market-leading smart parking platform provides an integrated solution from the sensor, to detection middleware, to web and mobile apps to drive business value. Streetline will tap its experience and product skills to deliver high impact solutions and launch new smart city services that can change how we work and live.
"As cities look for ways to tap technology to improve city services and quality of life, innovations in sensing capabilities offer promise to help tackle some of the most pressing issues facing our communities," said R "Ray" Wang, Founder and Chairman of Constellation Research. "This is an exciting time for the 'Internet of Things' for cities. The ability to use real-time parking, sound and temperature data to rethink how our cities are managed is only just beginning. Streetline is already making an impact with its smart parking solutions. The addition of sound and temperature is a natural extension toward building out a full 'smart city' portfolio."
"We've always believed the road to becoming a smart city starts with parking and today we're advancing that vision with the addition of sound level and temperature sensing," said Zia Yusuf, President and CEO of Streetline. "Because the ROI associated with parking justifies the initial investment, the addition of sound level and temperature sensing – using the same network infrastructure – further enhances the value. Real-time data will help to reshape how our cities are managed, and today's announcement is another important step in offering solutions to make the smart city vision a reality."
Using patented sensing technology, the Streetline system currently detects the presence of a vehicle and relays occupancy and parking policy information to a number of applications including Parker™ by Streetline, the leading motorist guidance app for iPhone and Android, and ParkerData™, Streetline's free API of over 25,000 off-street parking locations. With the platform enhancements unveiled today, customers can now add temperature monitoring, and sound level sensing will be available later this year.
