Stout's 2018 Automotive Warranty & Recall Report Details Positive Change in Recall Campaigns
CHICAGO, Sept. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Stout today released results of its latest research into automotive recalls in the 2018 Automotive Warranty & Recall Report.
Stout's fourth annual report builds on the original research that Stout began in 2013. As in years past – to complete this report – Stout has compiled and analyzed data from a vast array of sources, including National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) several international databases, financial reports, and other sources.
After several years of elevated activity created primarily by the massive Takata airbag recalls, the number of recalled vehicles in 2017 leveled off to match lower levels similar to those observed earlier this decade. However, there were still hundreds of recall campaigns in 2017, including several in excess of 1 million vehicles.
The data and insights found in this report are meant to help inform and shape future recall risk-management strategies for OEMs and suppliers.
"As technologies, global platforms, and materials continue to evolve, and advanced components, software and systems are forced to interact with one another for the first time, new recall risks will emerge," the report states. Some key findings from this year's report include:
- Even though the number of recall campaigns in 2017 remained consistent with previous years, the number of vehicles affected by those campaigns declined to its lowest level since 2013, due to limited expansion of Takata-related recalls compared with previous years.
- 2017 had the lowest number of unique recall campaigns involving more than 100,000 vehicles since 2009.
- The number of electrical systems recalls continued to increase in 2017 – as they have in recent years – a trend that will likely persist as new, technologically advanced components and software are introduced.
