Stop Hunger Now provides crisis relief meals to those affected by Hurricane Sandy in Haiti
RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Stop Hunger Now has shipped 285,000 meals to Haiti to provide food to families affected by the destruction of Hurricane Sandy.
John Winings, Executive Director of Haiti Fund reports, "Nearly all of the banana and plantain plants in the mountainous areas were destroyed, this will affect the farmers that rely on these crops to provide for their families. Heavy rains up to 25-30 inches over three days, pounded the region and wind gusts provided for a destructive combination for the plantations. The destruction of these crops will cause shortages of food across the region for months to come."
More than 10,000 people will receive Stop Hunger Now meals to help provide nutrition and a hot meal during this time of shortage. Haiti Fund, a trusted partner of Stop Hunger Now, will distribute the meals to farmers and their families throughout the mountain regions where the plantations were destroyed.
The development program of Haiti Fund is designed specifically to enable local people to become self-sufficient. However, the margin between self-sufficiency and hunger is very thin, and events like Hurricane Sandy can significantly interrupt the ability of these farmers to feed themselves and their families. The long-term shared goal of Stop Hunger Now and Haiti Fund is that people become self-sufficient in providing for their health and welfare and achieve economic independence.
Stop Hunger Now meals are packaged by volunteers of all ages through fun, hands-on meal packaging events throughout the United States. For more information and to schedule a meal packaging event, please visit www.stophungernow.org.
