FAIRFIELD, Conn., Nov. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC announces the 6th Annual Black History Month Essay Contest in commemoration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the national observance in February 2012. The essay contest is in support of Dr. King's vision to join together people from all walks of life and from all races and backgrounds, for the common good.

The goals of the Essay Contest are to increase knowledge and awareness about the importance of volunteerism and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., support our corporate diversity and inspire youth to consider their individual role in building character and community involvement.
Beginning November 14, 2011 students (grades 6-8) attending schools in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, are eligible to enter the Essay Contest provided they comply with all criteria listed in the Essay Contest Rules and Guidelines featured at www.stopandshop.com. Students must submit the application package (entry form and essay) via US mail no later than December 31, 2011. The essays should address the theme: "Making a difference – What can you do to help fight hunger in your community"? Each essay submission will be judged on the basis of originality, creativity and adherence to the essay topic. Two winners will be selected from every grade level and each winner will be awarded checks valued up to $750. Winners will be notified on or about February 6, 2012.
Stop & Shop will celebrate Black History Month in February 2012 with the release of the annual Profiles in Excellence brochure featuring African American cuisine throughout history.
