Stop & Shop Alerts Customers to Voluntary Recall by Jonathan Sprouts Inc.
Product may be contaminated with salmonella
FAIRFIELD, Conn., April 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Following notification from its supplier, Jonathan Sprouts Inc., Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC has removed from stores select Jonathan Sprouts products due to potential salmonella contamination. The following products, all with a sell by date of 4/23, are affected by this recall:
- Jonathan's Alfalfa Sprouts, 4 oz., UPC # 03338370080
- Jonathan's Alfalfa with Radish Sprouts (Zesty), 4 oz., UPC # 7947304019
- Jonathan's Alfalfa Sprouts, 8 oz., UPC # 7947308301
To date, Stop & Shop has received no reports of illness associated with consumption of this product. Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions or bring their purchase receipt to Stop & Shop for a full refund.
Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.
