Stoltenberg Consulting Teams with Ohio Northern University on Senior Capstone Projects
Company offers university's business students valuable experience through projects tackling industry issues
PITTSBURGH, June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Stoltenberg Consulting, Inc., a leading healthcare information technology consulting firm, recently participated in a critique of the capstone projects for senior business students at Ohio Northern University as the culmination of a year-long partnership with the university. The capstone projects addressed current industry issues and provided students with the opportunity to gain a hands-on understanding of healthcare IT and business fundamentals.
"Stoltenberg gave our students a fantastic opportunity to deal with real business problems and gain experience, realizing that they will be held accountable for what they've learned and recommended by reporting directly back to a real business and CEO," said Robert Kleine, associate dean and professor of marketing at the ONU James F. Dicke College of Business Administration. "The projects gave the students a keener expectation of the complexities of today's business problems and solutions while showing that businesses like Stoltenberg want to take an active role in growing future business leaders."
Stoltenberg Consulting CEO Sheri Stoltenberg collaborated with ONU course coordinators to develop prompts and questions, which were then chosen by student groups as the basis of their projects. The projects required financial analysis, industry insight, marketing strategy, human resource management, project goal setting and management, and an overall understanding of Stoltenberg's current industry position and services in HIT. Student teams worked with corporate contacts provided by Ms. Stoltenberg and addressed the issues posed to them for the entirety of the academic year, culminating in a final presentation for the Stoltenberg leadership team.
"New college graduates lack job experience, but they understand technology; it's intuitive to them," she said. "The senior capstone projects complement graduating students' familiarity with other perspectives of real world situations and environments. Additionally, the program provides us with excellent potential candidates for our junior consultant program, something our clients love, because they save money and develop talent at the same time."
A member of the James F. Dicke College of Business Administration Advisory Board, Ms. Stoltenberg notes that her company in the past two years has hired nine ONU graduates, who later became junior consultants. "The hiring process is rigorous, but ONU graduates come out on top. They are motivated, ethical and personable – three traits that Stoltenberg looks for."
"Stoltenberg capstone projects added a degree of realism, which is a close approximation of what the students will be doing post-graduation," Kleine added. "The experience will stay with the students forever, making them more valuable to prospective employers."
