KINGSPORT, Tenn., Oct. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Steven Eric Southerland, RN, BSN, AAS-EMTP, NREMTP is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional in the field of Healthcare as a result of his role as a Registered Nurse with the Holston Valley Medical Center.
Home to one of Tennessee's only six Level I trauma centers, the Holston Valley Medical Center is a part of the Wellmont Health System, a fully integrated health system providing compassionate care and top tier health services. The medical center was ranked in the top ten percent of hospitals nationwide in the areas of overall hospital care, medical care and surgical care.
Eric began his career in healthcare in 2000 after graduating from Tennessee Technology University with his Paramedic certification.
After moving to East Tennessee, he then continued his education toward his associate degree while advancing his Paramedic skills and obtaining his Virginia License, and National Registry Certification. He graduated from Northeast State Community College with his Associate Degree in Allied Health with a concentration in Paramedic. While working as a paramedic, Eric wanted to advance his career in healthcare and to also better understand his patients so he returned to college to complete his degree in Nursing.
Eric completed the necessary courses to become a Registered Nurse in 2010 and obtained a position as a staff nurse in the level one Trauma Center of Holston Valley Medical Center, where he became an iatrical part of the team and quickly advanced being regarded as a well-respected staff member and resource for both EMS agencies and the staff. He earned the respect of his peers and colleagues in the emergency department as well as throughout other departments and advanced to Relief Charge Nurse and then to the position he currently holds as a Clinical Resource Staff Nurse.
He currently holds instructor status in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Hospital Emergency Response Team, EPIC Credentialed Trainer, and Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum. He also is an instrumental force integrating new and advanced electronic systems throughout the department in conjunction with the informatics system at Holston Valley Medical center. He continues to advance the profession of nursing with development, implementation, and review of policies in the department. He assists and coordinates with disaster management services to maintain an active state of preparedness for the department and system.
When not teaching or helping to maintain day to day operations in the department, Eric compiles, analyzes, builds reports, and generates the data for daily operations and meaningful use criteria that is used by members of upper administration throughout the system to help make decisions about the current and future operations of the department.
Outside of work, Eric volunteers as a coordinator for an emergency response team with his church and enjoys woodworking, playing drums, and competitive shooting.
