The yearly SFMC Leader Board runs with every handicap season (April 9 to Oct 10). Recognizing the top players of the year, the Leader Board upholds the idea that rather than having a single event in which a player wins or loses, it's one's participation throughout the year that counts.
Local Stamford resident, Ian Boccaccio (a founding partner of the award-winning WTP Advisors in White Plains, NY), is the driving force behind current sponsorship of the SFMC leader board. Boccaccio and WTP Advisors recognized the need in the community that Sterling Farms Men's Club fulfills: by utilizing one of the best public golf courses in Fairfield County (Sterling Farms), the club enables men in Stamford to play competitive golf and fosters a sense of fellowship among local players.
While the recession is affecting the game of golf everywhere, and overall golf rounds are down nationwide, there remains a hunger for the game.
"The SFMC is filling this need; the organization does a fantastic job of organizing local guys in weekly events and creates a forum for competition," says Boccaccio.
According to SFMC president, Carl Gregorio "The leader board builds camaraderie – everyone looks at it every week to see how many points they move up, and where they stand. Getting a payout at the end of the year – it's the bragging rights of the club. If someone's debating on what to do on Sunday, it really forces them to say I think I can fit it in; let me play another round to get more points. It's a way to get members to participate."
Because of the handicap system any level golfer can play against another golfer and have an even stance.
In addition, because of Stamford's diverse employment opportunities which draw residents from all over the world, the SFMC helps people connect and become more entrenched in the community.
Boccaccio is also a member of the board of the SFMC. He feels strongly that sponsoring the non-profit SFMC, especially during an economic downturn, was the right thing to do to give back to the community. Although based in neighboring White Plains, WTP Advisors has strong ties to Stamford. It has created 40 new jobs in the area since 2005; a good portion of these positions are filled by Stamford residents.
Gregorio believes that WTP Advisors' sponsorship of the Leader Board has been, and will be, a vital element to the club's overall health. Without it, he says they would have had to cut costs, and offer smaller payouts to the leader board winners. In addition, Sterling Farms is playing host to the Shoreline Golf Tournament in 2012 (where six area clubs will compete).
"Having extra funds will help us prepare for an event that is poised to bring hundreds to the Stamford area," says Gregorio.
Most SFMC members are located in Stamford, but the club also attracts members from New Jersey and New York.
