Stellar 2012 for Pratt & Whitney PurePower® Geared Turbofan™ Engine Programs
EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Dec. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As of year-end, Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), has announced nearly 3,000 engine orders, including options, for its PurePower engine family with game-changing Geared Turbofan™ technology. The PurePower engine order book includes commitments from more than 35 airline and lessor customers around the world. In total, the program has completed more than 12,400 cycles and 4,200 hours of full engine testing, including more than 460 flight test hours.
The PurePower engine program achieved several important milestones in 2012. In June, the PW1200G engine for the Mitsubishi Regional Jet successfully completed its first flight test program, logging 23 flights and 127 hours using a specially designed stub wing on Pratt & Whitney's 747SP flying test bed.
In October, Pratt & Whitney completed assembly of the first engine to test (FETT) for its PurePower® PW1100G-JM engine – the lead engine on the Airbus A320neo aircraft family. A Last Bolt Ceremony held at Pratt & Whitney's West Palm Beach, Fla., facility celebrated the milestone with leadership from Pratt & Whitney, Airbus, MTU and JAEC in attendance. The engine, rated at 33,000 pounds of thrust, recently began testing. It is the third PurePower engine family member to begin full engine testing.
The PW1500G engine for the Bombardier* CSeries* aircraft is in its final stages of certification testing. The test program has completed thousands of hours of intensive testing, including three rounds and hundreds of flight testing hours. The engine is set to meet fuel burn, noise and reduced emissions commitments at entry into service.
"We are very proud of the milestones we achieved with the PurePower engine program this year," said Todd Kallman, president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines. "We promised a game-changing engine, and it's clear we are on track to deliver on that promise."
The PurePower engine has been selected to power the Bombardier* CSeries* aircraft and Mitsubishi Regional Jet. It is also lead engine for the Airbus A320neo aircraft and is the only western powerplant offered on the Irkut MC-21 narrow-body jet.
The combination of its gear system and advanced core allows PurePower engines to deliver double-digit improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions with dramatic noise reduction compared to today's engines.
Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.
