NEW YORK, Dec. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has awarded a two-year grant of $200,000 to the Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) towards its primary medical care services for homeless and formerly homeless adults in New York City.
The SNF award is a strong endorsement of CUCS' 35-year history of providing integrated programs that link housing, medical and mental health care, and social services for New York's most vulnerable people. The award will enable CUCS to expand its primary medical services through its affiliate Janian Medical Care.
"This award from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation will help us to provide medical services to people who do not access care in the traditional health care system," said Tony Hannigan, CUCS CEO and President.
CUCS began offering primary health care in 2013 to serve people who have transitioned from homelessness but suffer from complex health issues. The impact of homelessness on health and well-being cannot be overstated. The extreme stress of living in shelters or on the streets, exposure to the elements, communicable diseases, violence, malnutrition and lack of care are all significant factors that impede the ability to remain healthy.
"With this grant, the SNF is helping CUCS enhance its services for the most vulnerable people they serve, and enabling CUCS to remain at the forefront of providing such services as well as teaching others to do the same. The Foundation is also proud to join other important philanthropic foundations which are supporting CUCS in developing this work," said Roula Siklas, Program Officer at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation's New York office.
About CUCS: Founded at Columbia University in 1979 and incorporated as a separate non-profit organization in 1993, CUCS provides housing, medical and mental health services, employment services, information and referral, and poverty fighting programs to an average of 40,000 New York City individuals on an annual basis. It also trains approximately 12,000 professionals per year in the health and human fields nationwide. www.cucs.org
