Statement Regarding Ongoing "Fiscal Cliff" Negotiations
WASHINGTON, Dec. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and head of The Campaign to Fix the Debt:
Recent Congressional actions only serve to underscore the need for the President and Congress to continue striving for a comprehensive, bipartisan agreement to avert the "fiscal cliff" and stabilize the debt as a share of the economy and put it on a downward path.
Any agreement must be able to pass both houses of Congress and have support from the White House, but a plan to simply avert the cliff and allow for Members of Congress and the Administration to get out of town isn't enough; our elected leaders must use this opportunity to bend down the trajectory of our long-term debt.
Averting the cliff and fixing the debt isn't about the 1%, the 2%, the 47%, or even the 98%. It is about small-business owners, teachers, blue-collar workers, office workers, and employers. It is about each and every American. It is about policy and economic stability, a functioning political system, and economic growth. This can be the greatest generation of leaders, or just the selfish generation. This holiday season, the American people deserve, and expect to see, profiles in courage.
