WASHINGTON, Nov. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following is the statement of John Hughes, President of the National Press Club on the reports in Iranian media of the sentencing of Jason Rezaian of the Washington Post to time in prison following his reported conviction earlier this month of unsubstantiated charges of espionage.
The National Press Club deplores the announced sentencing of a reporter and innocent man to time in prison. Jason Rezaian has already been in prison for nearly 500 days. The glacial Iranian justice system has already been punishing him while pretending to be following a fair judicial process. He should be freed immediately. He has done nothing wrong. Jason's arrest and conviction were unjust. His incarceration has been harsh and punitive. Now he is sentenced for an unspecified term. This is another example of Iran's cruel indifference to justice.
