Statement of Mark H. Ayers, President of the Building and Construction Trades Department on the U.S. House of Representatives Rejection of Attacks on Project Labor Agreements and the Davis-Bacon Act
WASHINGTON, June 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For the third time in approximately three months, the U.S. House of Representatives voted yesterday to reject a misguided attempt to prohibit the federal government from even considering the utilization of project labor agreements (PLA) as a means to achieve increased productivity and cost-efficiencies, while also dismissing a move to strip prevailing wage protections for American construction workers.
In each instance, strong bi-partisan majorities emerged to support PLAs and Davis-Bacon prevailing wage standards. 27 House Republican representatives stood with America's Building Trades Unions in support of PLAs, while 54 GOP members supported Davis-Bacon.
Without question, these votes have sent an unmistakable message that such politically-motivated attacks must come to an end once and for all; and that our elected leaders in Washington should instead direct their energies and focus on the business of putting American workers back to work.
