Statement from the Campaign to Fix the Debt
WASHINGTON, March 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and head of the Campaign to Fix the Debt
"In testimony before Congress's Joint Economic Committee today, Campaign to Fix the Debt steering committee members Alice Rivlin and Judd Gregg gave impassioned arguments in favor of comprehensive legislation that would reduce the deficit and put our unsustainable national debt on a downward path as a share of the economy for decades to come.
"The Campaign would like to thank Committee Chair Rep. Kevin Brady and Vice Chair Sen. Amy Klobuchar – as well as Sen. Dan Coats and Rep. Carolyn Maloney – for holding today's hearing, which it called 'Flirting with Disaster: Solving the Federal Debt Crisis.' This is a fitting title; without enough deficit reduction to put our debt on a sustainable trajectory, we are looking at higher interest rates, inflation rates, and unemployment rates – not to mention slower economic growth – in the years to come. During the hearing, it was heartening that members of both parties on the Committee acknowledged that there is more work to be done.
"The Campaign to Fix the Debt thanks Dr. Rivlin and Sen. Gregg for their testimony, and the members of the JEC for holding today's hearing. We will continue working with members of both parties and with the Administration as they work to forge a comprehensive, bipartisan agreement to reduce our deficit and fix our debt."
