Statement From Bayview Yacht Club Regarding Sailing Tragedy on Lake Michigan
DETROIT, July 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Bayview Yacht Club regarding the sailing tragedy on Lake Michigan:
"All of us at Bayview Yacht Club send our condolences to the Chicago Yacht Club and the families of the sailors who perished in Lake Michigan this morning. We are deeply saddened at the loss of life of our fellow sailors. We are humbly reminded of the dangers of these open waters and storms that can strike with little warning.
This tragedy reminds all of the priority focus on safety while sailing. All sailors who sail open waters consider safety the first priority. This loss of life is a tragic reminder that these iconic races that celebrate Michigan waters should be approached with prudence, care and respect for the weather.
The sailboat that capsized in Lake Michigan early this morning was not registered to participate in the Bayview Mackinac Race. Again, our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the sailors and to the Chicago Yacht Club in the wake of this tragedy. It is sad news indeed for all sailors and a lesson that should stay with us all."
