Statement From American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown on Launch of National Physical Activity Plan May 3, 2010
WASHINGTON, May 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Americans need a motivational push from all sectors of society to get on their feet and reverse a growing trend of physical inactivity. That's why the American Heart Association is pleased to become a key strategic partner in the National Physical Activity Plan, co-leading the Business and Industry Sector of the eight sectors identified for specific calls to action. The association also looks forward to collaborating with all of the national partners involved in implementing the Plan to support other strategies across the various sectors. This initiative will help all Americans incorporate physical activity into their daily routines and make it a priority on their "To Do List" in the workplace, at home and in their communities. Routine physical activity can be safe and beneficial for all Americans, reducing their risk for heart disease, stroke and other chronic illnesses and improving overall quality of life. Unfortunately, nearly a quarter of the U.S. population does not participate in any physical activities.

As co-leader of the Business and Industry Sector, the American Heart Association will help identify and disseminate best practice models for physical activity in the workplace. The association recognizes worksites for prioritizing the health and wellness of their employees through providing on-site access to physical activity and healthy nutrition options that would be adapted to fit within the culture of the organization. The Start! Fit-Friendly Companies program recognizes worksites for their progressive leadership in stressing the importance of health and wellness among employees and providing the tools to make it happen. These programs have had a significant return on investment, improving employee's health and the company's bottom line with increased productivity, reduced absenteeism and turnover and reduced healthcare costs. The association launched Start! to encourage all Americans and their employers to create a culture of healthy living. For more information, visit, www.startwalkingnow.org.
We look forward to working with our public health partners, policymakers and industry leaders to build a national movement around physical activity. The association is deeply committed to helping Americans make that first step towards a healthier future.
