Statement by the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, on National Day of Service
OTTAWA, Sept. 11, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement today regarding Canada's National Day of Service:
"Twelve years ago today, thousands of innocent people from 90 countries lost their lives in a series of senseless terrorist acts in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Among the dead were 24 Canadians. Today we join in national remembrance of those who lost their lives and to pay respect to the families and friends of each victim who still feel that loss and pain.
"It is also important to remember the overwhelming kindness showed by Canadians across the country who were willing to open their homes to help our friends from around the world as they struggled to cope with this tragedy. As the former Toronto Police Chief, I was never more proud than when many members of the Toronto Police Force came forward to volunteer to help their American colleagues in their time of need. This story was repeated throughout our nation, when Canadians came together—civilians, Canadian Armed Forces personnel, police officers, firefighters and emergency medical service workers—to help and to heal.
"Today, we resolve to continue to defend the values of peace, freedom and democracy. In the spirit of this National Day of Service, I encourage all Canadians to show remembrance by continuing to make this day—September 11th—a day of helping and healing. It is my hope this feeling will continue in our hearts each day throughout the year, no matter where we are, as we work to establish peace and freedom throughout the world."
2013 is the Year of the Korean War Veteran—Canada proudly remembers the heroes of the Korean War and their brave fight to defend the Republic of Korea and uphold freedom, democracy and the rule of law. For more information on Canada's role in the Korean War, visit veterans.gc.ca.
