Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Death of Bruno Bobak

OTTAWA, Sept. 25, 2012 /CNW/ - It was with sadness that I learned today of the passing of Canadian war artist Bruno Bobak.

Throughout a career that spanned more than 60 years, Mr. Bobak made considerable contributions to art collections across Canada.

Mr. Bobak enlisted with the Canadian Army in 1942 with the Royal Canadian Engineers. After winning first prize in the Canadian Army Art Exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in 1944, he went overseas with the 4^th Canadian Armoured Division as Canada's youngest official war artist from October 1944 until July 1946. As part of the federal government's initiative to detail the Canadian war efforts overseas, Mr. Bobak documented war scenes from England, Belgium, Holland and France. He held the rank of captain and contributed more than 100 paintings and drawings to the Canadian War Collection.

Mr. Bobak was a Member of the Order of Canada.
