Statement by The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, on Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

OTTAWA, Dec. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - The Hon. Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, today issued the following statement on Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

"Today is Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

This day was established by Canada's Parliament in 1991 to ensure Canadians would never forget the tragic deaths of 14 young women who were murdered at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989.

As we mourn the loss of these women today, we are also reminded of all women and girls for whom violence - and the threat of violence - are daily realities.

I encourage all Canadians to commemorate this day by wearing a while ribbon, observing a minute of silence, or attending one of the solemn vigils being held in communities across Canada.

The actions that Canadians take today will help to increase awareness, inspire change, and bring an end to violence against women and girls."
