Statement By Robert Bonanza, Business Manager On The Passage Of Intro 730
NEW YORK, July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following statement was released today by Robert Bonanza, business manager of the Mason Tenders District Council, upon the passage of Into 730, the HPD Transparency Act:
On behalf of the 17,000 members of the Mason Tenders District Council, and its affiliated local unions, I want to thank Speaker Christine Quinn, sponsor Dominic Recchia and the New York City Council, for acting today, and passing Intro 730, the HPD Transparency Act. Thanks to the leadership of Speaker Quinn, the City Council has taken the first step in reforming, and bringing transparency to the way HPD conducts its business.
No public agency should operate under a veil of secrecy, least of all an agency charged with spending over $7 billion of taxpayer dollars. We all want an affordable housing program that provides quality, safe housing for New Yorkers, at an affordable cost. However, as result of the way HPD has awarded contracts, millions of dollars have been misappropriated, workers have been exploited and residents have been left with shoddy, dangerous homes.
Today the City Council has taken the first step in addressing the problems that have long plagued HPD. Transparency is always a good thing. We urge the Mayor to sign this bill into law and lift the veil of secrecy and corruption that has long permeated HPD.
The Mason Tenders District Council is part of the Laborers' International Union of North America. The 17,000 members of the MTDC include construction workers, asbestos and hazardous materials handlers, recycling and waste handlers and Catholic High School teachers.
