Statement by Rob Strayer on the Cyber Security Report Released by the Department of Commerce Today
WASHINGTON, June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Commerce Department released a report by its Internet Policy Task Force on improving the cyber security of information technology services that use the Internet. The report concentrates on information technology that provides a wide variety of online services to the public, but which is not considered so essential that it should be considered part of the nation’s critical infrastructure.
Rob Strayer, Director of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s National Security Preparedness Group, issued the following statement today regarding the Commerce Department’s new report on cyber security:
“This collaborative effort initiated by the Secretary of Commerce is commendable. It comprises a public-private partnership that is essential to developing successful cyber security policy. In the future, this type of cyber policy development should not occur under the purview of just one agency. Instead, it should include the cyber security expertise that exists across the entire government.
“The report appropriately focuses on incentivizing the adoption of cyber security best practices and increased information sharing. However, the report undervalues the potential for liability protections to act as an incentive for industry to share information about cyber threats and to implement protective measures.”
