Statement by Mayor Kim Adkins and Candidate for State Senate - 20th District
MARTINSVILLE, Va., July 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- We have a unique opportunity to contact our state delegation to let them know that we support closing the healthcare coverage gap. The Speaker of the House, William J. Howell, R-Stafford, announced yesterday that he will call the House into session the week of September 22 to discuss expanding healthcare insurance and preventive healthcare services to working individuals earning $16,104 a year or for a family of four, $32,913. (These earnings are according to the website, healthcare.gov.)
These working individuals currently earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but make too little to afford health insurance. Closing the healthcare coverage gap will save lives and help our hospitals and clinics avoid cutting services and jobs.
Since this special session has been planned, remind our legislators in this recent General Assembly session a true compromise to Medicaid expansion was introduced and had at one time bipartisan support in the Senate. This compromise is called "Marketplace Virginia," and it specifically uses private insurance providers to expand coverage, giving our residents the ability to buy private health insurance. Under this compromise, no one is added to the Medicaid rolls.
The truth is not getting out about this option to close the healthcare coverage gap. Our district deserves better.
