Statement by Irwin Redlener, MD, President, Children's Health Fund on Passage of a Health Care Reform Package by the House

NEW YORK, March 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Children's Health Fund (CHF) strongly supports the health reform package passed by the House and applauds Congress for its steadfast commitment to this momentous effort.  We believe that access to health care for all is a fundamental right, especially for children.  The action taken shows an unprecedented effort to make real and positive change for the health and well-being of all children in this country.  CHF thanks House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her ongoing leadership in the passing of health reform and her commitment to making children's needs a priority.

Throughout 2009 and 2010, CHF leadership, doctors and advocates have worked to support this historic passage of legislation that will mandate universal health insurance coverage for all children. The legislation passed includes a number of important and laudable provisions for children that are a huge first step in securing universal access to health care for all kids across this nation.  As a champion of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), we are particularly pleased that under this bill the successful program will continue until 2019 and funded through 2015. Once this health reform package is signed into law, CHF will continue to work with The Administration and Congress going forward to address remaining obstacles to children gaining full access to comprehensive health care.

We encourage Senator Harry Reid to pass the reconciliation bill swiftly this week, enabling the introduction of universal health care in this country to be realized.
