Statement by Dan Glickman on Today's Meeting Between President Obama, Vice President Biden and Republican Leaders
WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) Senior Fellow and former Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman issued this statement following President Barack Obama's meeting with Republican leaders today:
"The Bipartisan Policy Center commends President Obama, Vice President Biden and Republican leaders for forging a renewed working relationship following the recent midterm elections. As Congress concludes its work for the year and looks ahead to the new congressional session in January, we encourage the president and Congress to find solutions to our nation's growing deficit and debt.
"Any plan to reduce our nation's growing debt must be dictated by common sense and ideas from both sides of the political aisle. If rigid adherence to political ideologies on the right and left continues, very little progress will be made, and our nation's debt will become increasingly burdensome. Sensible economic, tax and spending policies are only one part of the solution. Those policies must be balanced with a healthy consideration for long-term growth. We encourage the president and Republican members to continue their dialogue and forge consensus on our nation's debt issues, as well as the many other pressing issues we face."
The BPC's Debt Reduction Task Force released its landmark budget plan, Restoring America's Future, earlier this month. The Debt Reduction Task Force is chaired by former Senate Budget Committee Chairman Pete Domenici and former White House Budget Director and Federal Reserve Vice Chair Alice Rivlin and includes 19 former White House and Cabinet officials, former Senate and House members, former governors and mayors, and business, labor, and other leaders.
