Statement - RCMP members committed to Surrey begin to arrive

OTTAWA, June 11, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today issued the following statement announcing that the deployment of the first 20 of 100 RCMP members committed to Surrey is already underway.

"Our Government continues to take action to ensure the safety and security of Canadians. No one should ever be afraid for their personal safety, or the safety of their families, when walking down a street in this country. That is why we announced last month that 100 additional RCMP members would be deployed to Surrey to help fight against the growing concern of gang-related violence.

Today, I am pleased to announce that the deployment of the first 20 members committed to Surrey is underway and that boots are already on the ground. I have made it a priority to ensure that Surrey would receive the RCMP members that they had requested. The Harper Government will continue to work hard to ensure that the streets of Surrey – and communities across the country ­– are safe.

This builds on the $3.5 million in funding over five years for the crime prevention project Surrey Gang Reduction Program."
