State Voter Hall of Fame Inducts 679 Members from Schuylkill County
POTTSVILLE, Pa., July 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame, which recognizes Pennsylvanians who have voted in at least 50 consecutive general elections, welcomed 679 new members at an induction ceremony today in Schuylkill County.
"Voting is the most fundamental right we enjoy as United States citizens," Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele told the inductees. "President Lincoln said 148 years ago at Gettysburg we have a government 'of the people, by the people, for the people.' Voting is the most basic means by which we, the people, keep control of our government."
The Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame is administered jointly by the Pennsylvania Department of State, which oversees elections in Pennsylvania, and the state's 67 county election offices.
Since the first members were inducted in 1982, Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame membership has grown to 17,525, including today's new members. Schuylkill County now has 2,101 residents in the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame. Each inductee receives a certificate signed by Governor Tom Corbett and Aichele.
Eligibility for the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame is determined by county election offices. Aichele urged county officials to hold induction ceremonies regularly.
"Citizens who vote every year not only sustain our government at the local, state, and national levels, they provide the best example possible to their children, grandchildren, and all of us of what it means to be a good citizen," Aichele said.
