State Voter Hall of Fame Inducts 160 Members from Somerset County, PA

SOMERSET, Pa., Oct. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame, which recognizes Pennsylvanians who have voted in at least 50 consecutive general elections, welcomed 160 new members at an induction ceremony today in Somerset County.

"Voting is among our most fundamental and important rights as United States citizens," Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele told the inductees. "Especially here in Somerset County, where 40 heroes died on Flight 93 in our first battle in the war on terror, the act of voting reaffirms citizens' belief in our form of government."

The Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame is administered jointly by the Department of State, which oversees elections, and the state's 67 county election offices.

Since the first members were inducted in 1982, Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame membership has grown to 18,398, including today's new members. Somerset County now has 788 residents in the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame. Each inductee receives a certificate signed by Governor Tom Corbett and Aichele.

Eligibility for the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame is determined by county election offices.  Aichele urged county officials to hold induction ceremonies regularly.

"Citizens who vote every year not only keep elected officials at the local, state, and national levels accountable, they provide the best example possible to their children, grandchildren, and all of us of what it means to be a good citizen," Aichele said.
