State of Michigan Taps Unisys to Build New Child Welfare Services System
Unisys will design and maintain integrated system to meet new data quality and information-sharing requirements
BLUE BELL, Pa., Sept. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The State of Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget has awarded a contract to Unisys (NYSE: UIS) to build and maintain a new child welfare services system to serve the needs of thousands of children and social workers in Michigan.
Designed to meet new state and federal data quality and information-sharing requirements, the Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System will provide an integrated database for use by Michigan Department of Human Services workers to track the cases of approximately 15,000 children involved in the state's foster care and adoption services programs.
The new contract was awarded in the first quarter of this year and will run three years, and the State of Michigan may extend it for two additional one-year periods at its discretion. This contract has a value of approximately $30 million, and the State may order additional services that could bring the total potential value of the contract to approximately $47 million.
The Unisys solution will integrate all aspects of the child welfare process from eligibility to adoption and financial management while maintaining secure access to data for authorized government workers and providing a centralized data repository to help ensure data quality.
Unisys has extensive experience supporting the child welfare system in the State of Michigan. In 1991, Unisys began developing a predecessor system to the new automated child welfare system, which has been modified extensively since then.
"As a longtime IT provider to the State of Michigan, Unisys and its team members are pleased to be able to assist in the implementation of this essential system to support thousands of children in the state," said Caralyn Brace, vice president and general manager; Technology, Consulting and Integration Solutions; North America. "We plan to provide the state with a modernized platform that is designed to adapt to meet the demands of ever-changing mandates and legislative requirements."
