State Museum Insiders' Tour Part of Harrisburg's Annual Gallery Walk
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To complement the 2011 Art of the State exhibition currently on view, The State Museum of Pennsylvania will offer its third and final insiders' tour at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. Artist Lydia Panas, winner of the Art of the State's first prize in photography as well as Best of Show, and awards juror Ricardo Viera, director/curator, Lehigh University Art Galleries, Bethlehem, will collaborate to share their perspectives on the exhibition.
A photography instructor at the Baum School of Art in Allentown, Panas has exhibited widely in the United States, Europe and Asia. Her photographs have been featured in publications such as the "New York Times Magazine" and are included in a number of prestigious collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock, N.Y. Viera is a noted lecturer, panelist and consultant for a number of arts and cultural institutions and organizations. He established a nationally recognized collection of Latino/Latin American art, photography and video at Lehigh University.
This program marks the final day for the exhibition and coincides with Harrisburg's Annual Gallery Walk, a free event highlighting the city's many artistic venues. Gallery Walk programs, including The State Museum's Insiders' Tour, are free to the public, and reservations are not required. The State Museum will extend its hours, operating from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., for Gallery Walk.
Other State Museum programs planned in conjunction with Gallery Walk include:
- Final Day, 1 p.m.–3 p.m.: IdeaZone: Experience the Arts, a hands-on learning room for all ages. Visitors to IdeaZone will learn about theater, dance, music, media, architecture and fine arts and can create pieces for a community art wall.
- 2 p.m.: Reception, The DOSHI Gallery at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, A Project of the Susquehanna Art Museum (SAM), highlighting the exhibit Latent Images, featuring approximately 36 works of art created by emerging and established artists.
- All day: SAM's mobile exhibit VanGO! will be parked adjacent to The State Museum and open for Gallery Walk.
Art of the State is recognized as the official, statewide juried competition for Pennsylvania artists. This year's show, featuring 135 pieces from 133 artists working throughout the state, is co-presented by the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council and The State Museum.
The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 25 historic sites and museums administered by Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History®. Regular museum hours are Wed. through Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sun., noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children and senior citizens.
