Union Launches New Contract Campaign
BERKELEY, Calif., July 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) of the State of California issued a series of decisions on July 19, 2010, rejecting legal challenges to the affiliation of the University of California (UC) Coalition of University Employees (CUE) with the Teamsters. An overwhelming majority – 81 percent – of CUE's voting members voted in May to join forces with the Teamsters and have subsequently been chartered as CUE-Teamsters Local Union No. 2010.

The Union is currently focused on winning a fair contract for its members, in the face of University attempts to roll back wages and benefits of clerical workers who are already woefully underpaid.
"These legal victories support the choice made by CUE's members to be Teamsters and to bring the strength and power of their new 1.4 million brothers and sisters into our contract fight," said Anytra Henderson, Acting President of CUE. The charges were initiated as part of a raid against CUE by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) which is trying to expand its UC membership. Previous legal challenges to the CUE-Teamsters' affiliation which were designed to assist with raiding have already been rejected by the California Superior Court and an AFL-CIO Labor Arbitrator.
CUE-Teamster leaders from many University campuses recently convened a two-day meeting with Teamster International Union departments to receive training on strategic planning, communications and implementing a state-wide campaign to secure a new contract.
"The interests of all the University employees can best be served by labor supporting each other against the University's efforts to deny a fair contract with adequate wages to hard-working UC employees. Raiding will not benefit anyone," said Michael Filler, Director of the Teamsters Public Services Division.
CUE-Teamsters Local 2010 represents 14,000 administrative, clerical and related employees at each University of California campus/medical center in the state and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
