State Agencies Recognize 9 Businesses, Training Providers for Efforts to Put Pennsylvanians to Work
HERSHEY, Pa., May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nine employers and training providers today received Governor's Achievement Awards for outstanding hiring and workforce-development success.
Representatives of state workforce-development agencies personally recognized the businesses for their accomplishments at the 27th annual Pennsylvania Partners Employment, Training & Education Conference, being held at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center through Friday.
"I commend these businesses for partnering with our workforce-development system to look beyond what some people see as employment barriers to hire and train workers who can help them succeed in today's economy," said Department of Labor & Industry acting Secretary Julia Hearthway.
Hearthway was represented at the awards ceremony by Daniel Kuba, acting director of Labor & Industry's Bureau of Workforce Development Partnership.
"We congratulate these employers who seek older workers and recognize their experience and expertise," said Secretary of Aging Brian Duke. "Whether continuing to work in a lifelong career or pursuing an encore career, older Pennsylvanians make meaningful contributions to the success of their employers each day."
"When we work with employers to train Pennsylvanians for gainful work opportunities, everyone benefits," acting Public Welfare Secretary Gary Alexander said. "We all reap the rewards of a more robust and competitive workforce, a reduced dependence on government assistance, and fewer costs for taxpayers."
Alexander was represented at the awards ceremony by Dr. Bryon Noon, director of DPW's Bureau of Employment & Training Programs.
Education Secretary Ron Tomalis trumpeted the success of the Education Workforce Leadership Award winners' partnership.
"The Erie County Technical School offers real-world training in a variety of disciplines that help students obtain satisfying and valuable job placement after high school," Tomalis said. "The working relationship between the Erie County Technical School and Scott Enterprises, a key player in the area's hotel and restaurant industry, is a great example of how partnerships can help meet the workforce demands of the region, and deserves to be applauded this way. Congratulations to ECTS and Scott Enterprises."
The awards are jointly sponsored by state workforce-development agencies – the departments of Aging, Labor & Industry, Education and Public Welfare – and Pennsylvania Partners to recognize exceptional employers and training providers who promote outstanding hiring practices and workforce-development practices.
Pennsylvania Partners, an association of workforce development professionals in each of the state's 23 workforce investment areas, sponsors this annual conference, which attracts more than 800 private and public job-training experts from across Pennsylvania.
