SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Make School today announced that its Bachelor's degree in Applied Computer Science is now the first program of its kind accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which accredits traditional colleges including Stanford, the University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology. Launched in 2014 as an alternative to a 4-year college degree, Make School's alumni now work with top tech employers including Facebook, Google, Apple, and Tesla.
"Students shouldn't have to choose between getting a degree and developing the technology and leadership skills that have enabled our alumni to succeed in the modern economy," said Make School co-founder Ashu Desai. "The college degree remains a powerful path to upward mobility, and our new program reflects the importance of pairing a cutting-edge computer science education with a strong foundation in liberal arts."
The unique degree program, which was designed in collaboration with more than 30 Silicon Valley employers, is rooted in a project-based curriculum that reflects the evolving needs of top technology firms. Students who opt into a unique pay-for-performance model will only be responsible for tuition payments when their income exceeds $60,000.00.
"The elimination of upfront tuition aligns our incentives with the goals of students at a time when the cost of, and return on, a college degree continues to grow," said Jeremy Rossmann, co-founder of Make School. "40% of our students come from backgrounds underrepresented in tech. This is about closing not just skill, but equity gaps."
Under WASC's incubation model for accreditation, Make School is collaborating with Dominican University of California, a small, independent college, on the development of a computer science program that will include both the Make School Bachelor's Degree and a minor in computer science available at Dominican University's campus, just north of San Francisco.
