StartApp Study Pinpoints the Regional Struggles for Dating App Users
Study: Maine offers the most even ratio of men and women using dating apps but San Francisco boasts better odds for making cultured connections
NEW YORK, Nov. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- When it comes to standing out from the crowd, Alaska may be the hardest place to meet someone new using a dating app, according to insights-driven mobile technologies company StartApp.
StartApp today shared study results that identified where dating app users are likely to find the best balance of men and women using dating apps, where the largest pools of dating app users can be found, and maybe where dating app users have the greatest chance to meet someone interested in literature, travel or banking.
StartApp tapped into its global database of over 1 billion monthly active app users to calculate what can be challenges for dating app users in U.S. states, regions and cities. With a nearly three-to-one ratio of men to women using dating apps, Alaska has the widest gender gap of any U.S. state. Dating app users looking for the most even balance of men and women using dating apps can be found in Maine.
"Big data and analytics have changed the way brands approach mobile strategies – and this was a fun way to show how StartApp provides valuable insight into consumer behavior," said Ran Avidan, StartApp Co-Founder and CTO.
"By showing mobile users' intents and behaviors across categories of apps, we can enable our partners to deliver fulfilling mobile experiences."

Mobile devices are woven into the fabric of nearly everyone's daily life, so naturally dating apps have become very common. That made for a perfect app category to highlight how there can be gaps between regions. For example, Arkansas is the U.S. state with the lowest (7%) use of dating apps and Nebraska and Maryland are tied for the largest pools (13%) of dating app users.
Overall the study showed that many states share a disproportion of women using dating apps (37% to 63% of men) and that states such as Illinois where 12% of residents have dating apps on their devices may be carried primarily by a single city. Chicago and Houston are home to the highest number of dating app users in the nation, but the number of men using data apps overshadowed the number of women.

StartApp showed the power of taking a granular view of the distinct regions within certain cities as well. A comparison of the five boroughs of New York City showed that dating app users looking for the most well-read residents can be head to Brooklyn, where one can find the most (17%) dating app users who also read books on their phone. For people who put a priority on current events, Manhattan boasts the most (17%) dating app users who also use news apps. The Bronx appears to take the lead on personal finance, with the highest percentage (59%) of dating app users who also have banking apps on their phone – compared to just 35% in Manhattan.
Coast to Coast
StartApp took the opportunity to see how large U.S. cities compared to each other. While the ratio of men and women using dating is about the same when comparing New York state with California, but the pool of dating app users in the Golden State is deeper (12%) with nearly twice as many dating app users per capita than New York.
Ultimately, San Francisco may be where dating app users can find well rounded connections. The city has the highest proportion (42%) of all dating app users who also use travel apps (the average across America for dating app users is 11%). The city also takes the lead in dating app users who stay current on events with an impressive 39% of dating app users also having news apps – over 3 times higher than the average American dating app user.
