The Destination Imagination after school program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning.
DI students learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at tournaments, and if they excel, they may advance to a worldwide creative celebration known as Global Finals.
More than 1.5 million youth have taken part in Destination Imagination problem-solving challenges in the past 30 years. Participating in DI has helped them develop critical thinking skills they can apply to their future schooling and careers to give them a competitive advantage for the rest of their lives.
Two years in a row, students taking part in Destination Imagination said in surveys that DI has helped them improve their grades, and that they "do better in school." DI programs are in more than 7,000 schools worldwide, and growing every year.
There are seven new Challenges to choose from each year. Each year, the Challenges are developed by a team of educators and industry experts who target a particular area of the curriculum and related standards of content and performance.
The season is divided into stages that help team managers guide young people to work and grow together as a team, nurture self respect and enhance their own self-knowledge, self-confidence and problem-solving skills.
Each season takes place from September through May. Depending on the Challenge, teams typically spend two to four months developing and practicing their Challenge solutions.
Chuck Cadle, M.Ed., CEO of Destination Imagination Inc., urged school administrators, teachers, parents and group leaders of all kinds to go to www.DestinationImagination.org to start the sign-up process right away and get an early start.
