SYDNEY, Dec. 14, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world's largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today announced that Star Track Express, an Australian logistics and transport provider, is now using a new Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) platform to enact significant upgrades to its website and customer portal. The new customer portal provides users much greater functionality, including a more detailed tracking display, costing calculations access, proof of delivery signature viewing, receiver detailed record maintenance and dispatch creation.

By migrating all data from the legacy systems onto one enterprise data warehouse, Star Track Express avoids the cost of supporting and maintaining separate data marts.
In parallel with the new website project, Star Track Express migrated from its existing SQL Server Data Warehouse onto the Teradata Active EDW platform. Star Track Express led the migration project supported by Teradata Professional Services, successfully completing the migration in less than six weeks and under budget.
"One of the most satisfying aspects of the migration has been that we were able to lead the project with only minimal support from the Teradata technical team, despite having only had a Teradata system for less than three months," General Manager, Information Systems, Jeff Monico, Star Track Express, said. "This means we were able to drive our own deployment and manage costs efficiently to get the system up and running quickly."
Star Track Express prides itself on providing the best level of service and the new portal demonstrates its commitment to innovation and customer service. The system handles the mixture of large business intelligence queries, continuous and batch loads without compromising the tactical sub-second queries from the web. Currently the database loads four million records per day in near real-time, and receives up to 190,000 queries per hour. This number is expected to double in the coming months as all registered users migrate from the old portal.
This platform and the Teradata Transportation Logical Data Model sit at the centre of the new information architecture supporting the Portal, and also Star Track Express's reporting and analytical capability. National Business Solutions Architect, Martin McManus, Star Track Express, said, "We already have one of the world's smartest and most advanced delivery and freight management systems. Now with Teradata we have created an even stronger customer-centric view of our business and have strengthened our ability to deliver on our commitment to provide the best express service at the lowest possible cost. We chose Teradata because of its consulting expertise and unique ability to handle the mixed workloads involved within active data warehousing. In addition, Teradata's linear scalability will ensure the platform continues to meet our needs as our requirements grow."
In the past five years Star Track Express has made major investments in the development of its infrastructure and equipment, ensuring an increasing lead over its competitors. The company is a joint venture of Australia Post and Qantas.
Alec Gardner, industry consultant director at Teradata, said, "At Teradata we have a wealth of experience working with many of the world's top transportation and logistics providers. With Teradata's experience in the industry and Star Track Express's commitment to innovation, we've been able to leverage its information to solve business problems. We've built a strong partnership that has given Star Track Express market advantage."
