Star Career Academy Students Win People's Choice Award At Long Island's Evening of Good Taste Event
Chef Lenny Messina Honored for Service to Event
NEW YORK, March 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- For 20 years, An Evening of Good Taste event has been raising money for the South Nassau Communities Hospital. Chef Lenny Messina, a certified pastry chef and instructor at Star Career Academy Long Island for more than 12 years, has been involved with the event since its inception.
Chef Messina was honored for his 20 years of service to the event during the recent tasting banquet held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY. Star Career Academy Long Island was also recognized for its many years of support to An Evening of Good Taste.
"Overall it was a great night for Star Career Academy Long Island," said Messina, who also served as a judge for the event. "I look forward to being a part of this event every year. I enjoy judging, and mentoring students. I love it when I see some past contestants and they tell me their success stories."
An Evening of Good Taste features more than 100 of the most prestigious chefs, restaurants, bakeries, wineries and breweries from across Long Island. The event included a professionally judged competition in a broad range of categories, sanctioned by the Long Island Chapter of the American Culinary Federation. Patrons also voted for their favorite selection in the People's Choice Award.
In fact, a team of Star Career Academy night students won the event's prestigious People's Choice Award, meaning this was the favorite dish of attendees among all courses served by teams from restaurants, bakeries, schools, hotels and catering halls.
Sixteen students created four individual dessert tasting portions: a coconut macadamia nut cake, classic chocolate mousse, a tri-color almond cake and a joconde sponge cake.
"We were shocked to win since we were not entered in any competition for the event," said Chef Ginamarie Lepera, an instructor at Star Career Academy Long Island. "We were ecstatic and I was so proud of our students who worked together, helping each other with different aspects of all four desserts. They gave 110 percent."
