Stanley Martin Homes Jumps 10 Spots in the National Builder100 Rankings and 130 Spots from Their "Pre-Bubble" Ranking
RESTON, Va., May 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In a sign of continued recovery for the DC housing market, Reston-based Stanley Martin Homes climbed 10 spots from last year's ranking to be named the 63rd largest homebuilder in the nation. As the highest ranking privately held builder in the DC area, Stanley Martin's considerable rise in the Builder100 rankings is a unique one, as they have climbed 130 spots since 2004 and are also one of the few builders in the nation to be bigger now than they were prior to the housing bubble.
Since 2004, Stanley Martin Homes has risen in the ranks every single year. During the downturn, the 46 year old company changed their business model, as they began to build smaller, more affordable homes in an effort to meet the changing consumer demands. This strategic shift allowed them to gain considerable market share at a time when many builders were going bankrupt. Additionally, Stanley Martin was well positioned in terms of their land deals, as the company's leadership made an intentional effort to only buy land "where the jobs are." These two strategies helped the builder to not only weather the storm of the downturn, but come out stronger and more resilient, as a result.
Over the past two years, the DC market has regained significant strength, prompting Stanley Martin to once again return to building larger, more luxurious homes. However, Stanley Martin took the lessons learned during the downtown and implemented these best practices into their newest designs. Said differently, Stanley Martin Homes is building smarter, more efficient homes than ever before. Although the square footage is larger, the space is utilized more efficiently – no two story foyers or two story living rooms, as it's Stanley Martin's stance that buyers would rather allocate that space to larger bedrooms and/or multiple walk-in closets.
