Stanford Launches Online Certificate in Genetics and Genomics
First two courses in program launch on September 1, 2014.
STANFORD, Calif., Sept. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Two world-renowned schools - the Stanford School of Medicine and the Stanford School of Engineering – have joined forces to create their first online professional certificate program. The Stanford Genetics and Genomics Certificate combines Stanford's expertise in medicine, technology and online learning to offer a world class education in genetics and genomics online. Courses are taught by faculty from Stanford's Department of Genetics, a world leader in the fields of genetics, genomics and personalized medicine. Guest lecturers provide industry insight. The Stanford School of Engineering, through its Stanford Center for Professional Development, shares its expertise in delivering global online instruction.
"These online genetics, genomics and medical courses provide both a solid foundation and advanced exploration of cutting edge technologies used in the field," says Dr. Michael Snyder, Academic Director of the certificate and professor and Chair of the Department of Genetics at Stanford School of Medicine. Participants may take individual courses within the program, or earn a Stanford professional certificate in genetics and genomics by completing 2 core courses and 4 elective courses in topics such as biotechnology, stem cells, cancer, gene therapy, pharmagenomics, and biology. The self-paced courses employ online lectures, videos and exercises, and may be taken at any time anywhere in the world. Medical sales representatives, R&D managers, technology leaders, venture capitalists and anyone interested in biology and human health can develop the real-world skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving genetics industry.
DNA sequencing technologies promise to advance the field of personalized healthcare and commercial applications of genetics research are growing rapidly. The dramatic expansion and acceleration of genetics and genomics research provides tremendous opportunity and creates a demand for cutting edge education in this space. The Stanford Genetics and Genomics Certificate meets that demand. Utilizing the expertise of the Stanford faculty, along with top industry leaders, this program builds a strong knowledge base and cultivates a 'big picture' understanding of new and developing industry trends and technologies.
Acceptance into the program is ongoing and participants may apply to the Stanford Genetics and Genomics Certificate program online.
