Standards of Fire Safety Must Match International Standards
DUBAI, UAE, January 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Due to a high incidence of fires across the MENA region, Civil Defence Authorities are insisting on higher standards of fire safety across the board.
The MENA region is currently experiencing a spectacular growth of building development and huge capital investment particularly from international shareholders. Qatar, in particular, has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Therefore, it is expected that standards of fire safety, specifically within construction and infrastructure projects, should increase not only to safeguard the health and safety of the inhabitants but to protect these valuable assets. However, lack of maintenance inspections by certified, competent engineers and a proactive fire safety approach coupled with poor workplace health and safety contribute to the frequency of fire incidents. This is further complicated by confusion created from using a high number of international fire safety codes. Therefore, now is the perfect time to review how project teams within the region are effectively tackling these issues.
The MENA region is keen to review methods of reducing the risk of fire during the construction phase, many of which will be discussed at IQPC's inaugural Fire Safety MENA 2011 conference, to be held at the Oryx Rotana, Doha between 3 - 6 April 2011. Wayne Harris, HSE Director at Qatar Project Management will share his perspective on ensuring fire safety within construction projects by reviewing an effective fire risk profile. He will also evaluate stakeholders impacts and mitigation planning for emergencies as well as review the process of designing out fire risk and potential hazards.
Wayne Harris will be joined by speakers from Mott MacDonald, COWI, Atkins and Consolidated Contractors International to review developing fire safety solutions for underground infrastructure, incorporating fire safety strategies within sports arenas and achieving best-practice fire safety within the construction and operational phases.
