BAY MINETTE, Ala., Jan. 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Standard Furniture announced yesterday that it will cease manufacturing laminated case goods at its Bay Minette, Alabama location. The product line represents less than 6 percent of the Company's annual revenue. Following the completion of production on or about March 31, 2019, the Company will relocate its home accessories and warehousing operations from Frisco City, Alabama to the Bay Minette location. As a result, Standard expects to eliminate approximately 185 related positions. "This Product Line never recovered from the recession. During this time, the price of bedroom products deflated significantly including massive reductions in ocean freight, which put our products in direct competition with a broad assortment of import wooden bedrooms that carry a higher perceived value," according to Todd Evans, Standard Furniture's CEO.
The Company is experiencing significant growth in its primary businesses, including expanded domestic upholstered furniture production at its Albany Industries affiliate with increases in capacity at the New Albany and Pontotoc, Mississippi locations, three new production lines in Galax, VA, and relocation of the Tampa, Florida location. Bay Minette continues to serve as Standard's corporate headquarters and is home to over 1 million square feet of warehouse space that supports its growing international furniture design, import and distribution business.
