SAINT PAUL, Minn., May 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The nation's largest single-day food drive is taking place on Saturday, May 14, and Minnesotans can easily participate by filling a bag with non-perishable food items and leaving it at their mailbox. Locally, Stamp Out Hunger, which is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, hopes to collect enough food to provide one million meals to hungry Minnesotans. Just one bag of food can go a long way toward helping a local family share a wholesome meal.
"Stamp Out Hunger is an opportunity for the community to work together to end hunger here in the heartland," said Rob Zeaske, Second Harvest Heartland CEO. "By simply placing a bag of food by your mailbox, you can help a local family enjoy a much-needed meal. With Stamp Out Hunger, it's never been easier to make a truly significant difference for our hungry neighbors."
Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is as easy as filling a bag with non-perishable food items—like canned meats, fruits and vegetables; peanut butter; pasta and rice; or boxed meals—and leaving it by your mailbox. More than 2,000 metro-area letter carriers will collect those food donations on their regular seven-county metro residential mail routes. The food will be delivered to Second Harvest Heartland, where it will help provide much-needed food for the one in 10 Minnesotans at risk of hunger each day.
Those who are unable to participate in Stamp Out Hunger and those who would like to increase their impact can also make a financial donation online at 2harvest.org/stampout through May 18, 2016, and Land O'Lakes will match the gift up to a total of $25,000.
Local sponsors of this year's Stamp Out Hunger food drive include National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 9, Minneapolis and Branch 28, St. Paul; Cub Foods; KARE 11;
Land O'Lakes, Inc.; Minnesota Transport Services Association; and WCCO Radio. To learn more, visit 2harvest.org/stampout.
