Stabilizing Economy in California Gives Construction a Boost
Strong gains in residential building, public works, and utilities improve outlook for 2010, says McGraw-Hill Construction
NEW YORK, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- McGraw-Hill Construction, part of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP), has released the 2010 California Construction Outlook. "The turnaround in the California economy will be beneficial for construction, which will rebound 21% to $42.7 billion in 2010," states the report. "This is a welcome change after four consecutive annual declines in construction starts."
Highlights of the report conclude:
- Single family starts are expected to rise 40%, and multifamily housing will increase 22%, demonstrating strong overall gains of 37% in the residential sector.
- Commercial and industrial construction starts will retrench by 11% to $4.2 billion in 2010 due to the shrinking job market, weakening tourism, and an excess of industrial capacity.
- Institutional starts are expected to rise 11% in 2010 to $12.9 billion.
- Public works and utilities projects are estimated to gain 34% in 2010.
In addition to the 2010 forecast, the report provides in-depth construction analysis by major sector, as well as construction starts for the area dating back to 2004 in more than 10 major categories, including stores and shopping centers, offices, hotels, manufacturing buildings, educational buildings, healthcare, public works, utilities, and multifamily and single family housing.
