Univision Radio stations in 17 participating cities across the country and Puerto Rico will dedicate two days, more than 30 hours of programming, to help St. Jude provide pioneering research and exceptional care to children battling deadly diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for anything. The radio event highlights St. Jude patient testimonials and radio promotions to encourage listeners to become Angeles de Esperanza (Angels of Hope) by making a donation of $20 per month.
St. Jude Promesa y Esperanza will continue this year with the support of Univision's local television stations, online, mobile and social media platforms in addition to the Univision America AM radio network. During the broadcast, donations can be made using a debit or credit card by calling 1-800-998-8432 at no cost, which entitles donors to a St. Jude Promesa y Esperanza t-shirt; or by visiting promesayesperanza.org from any desktop, tablet or mobile device. Fans can also join the conversation on Twitter via @StJude and using the hashtag #StJudeUvn.
"Univision Radio is committed to supporting the lifesaving mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital," said Jose Valle, president of Univision Radio. "There is no place like St. Jude. Its doctors and scientists use a pioneering approach to develop and identify promising new treatments and drugs to help children in the United States, Puerto Rico and around the world have a chance at life."
Since its inception in 1997, St. Jude Promesa y Esperanza has grown to be one of the most successful radio fundraising programs in the U.S. Hispanic market, raising more than $80 million in cash and pledges to help thousands of children like seventeen-year-old Susy.
At St. Jude, doctors confirmed that Susy suffered from Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Susy's treatment includes eight weeks of chemotherapy and 17 rounds of radiation. To her family's relief, Susy has responded well to treatment and will finish treatment soon. Many children like her are able to dream of a future because they are receiving exceptional medical care and their families will never have to pay St. Jude for anything.
"Each year Univision Radio listeners across the nation are inspired by the lifesaving mission of St. Jude thanks to the stations that share our story of hope with the Hispanic community," said Richard Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. "We're grateful for the support of Univision Radio in helping us raise awareness and funds to continue finding cures and saving children in communities everywhere."
The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.8 million and more than 75 percent of that funding is covered primarily by public contributions and through events like St. Jude Promesa y Esperanza. St. Jude treats some of the world's sickest children with pioneering research and exceptional care under one roof. The hospital covers the cost of treatment, travel, lodging and food for patients and a family member. St. Jude also freely shares its research with the medical community, so that one child saved at St. Jude means thousands more saved around the world.
About St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
Since opening 50 years ago, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has changed the way the world treats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives and, for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries. The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life.
