St. John's Military School Harmed By Former Student's Hoax

SALINA, Kan., March 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- St. John's Military School is seeking partial summary judgment involving a lawsuit brought on behalf of Michael Kelly in U.S. District Court for Kansas, following the former cadet's admission that his earlier egregious claim of being taped, bound and gagged against his will was clearly untrue.

"Sadly, this is an instance where a false statement, false allegation, a false photograph and false exhibits were filed with the court and then widely disseminated by the media. This has caused significant harm to St. John's Military School," said St. John's President Andrew England.

"Considerable attorney's fees, expenses and staff hours have been expended battling the false allegation of this former cadet. His untrue statement resulted in unfounded litigation and unfair and erroneous public perception. The immense harm to St. John's reputation and our students is significant and long-lasting," England said.

According to St. John's filing, Kelly recanted his earlier groundless assertion regarding an alleged incident where he falsely claimed he was bound, taped and gagged against his will. In his sworn deposition he indicated that his actions were, incredibly, intended as a joke. However, when prospective students or their parents conduct an Internet search for St. John's, links to the false allegations of Kelly and subsequent news video interview and printed news stories showing the falsehoods portray St. John's cadet learning environment in an unfavorable manner.
