Opportunity of a Lifetime for Medically minded high school and college students
GRENADA, West Indies, Feb. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Enrollment is now open for high school and college students interested in applying for the St. George's University Summer Leadership Academy in Grenada which will take place this June and July.
Now in its thirteenth year, the premedical and preveterinary Summer Leadership Academy offers high school and undergraduate college students a unique opportunity to get a hands-on, real-world look at the life of medical/veterinary students and practitioners.
"On a campus that covers the beautiful True Blue peninsula overlooking the Caribbean Sea, this is an exceptional program for students, that balances a challenging academic program with extracurricular activities selected to highlight the culture and innate beauty of Grenada," said Kerricia Hobson, Program Director.
The high school program is a ten-day program of didactic lectures, small-group problem solving sessions, practical lab work in state-of-the art facilities, and hands-on training through simulated and real-life situations.
College students attend for 12 days and enjoy the additional benefit of having medical leadership concepts integrated into the curriculum, drawing upon St. George's global expertise, CEPH-accredited Public Health program, and medical MBA program. This foundation provides students with an opportunity to gain skills that can help them to stand ahead of their peers in standard medical programs. They are introduced to international health care systems, global public health issues, and how the concept of "One Health, One Medicine" affects healthcare delivery throughout the world.
"I attended the SGU Summer Academy in 2011 and was so impressed I decided to apply to the SGU veterinary program," said Kristin Sellar, St. George's University veterinary student. "I'm now a 4th term vet student in Grenada. Four of my friends from the academy are now in the medical school program and another is in the vet school. The Summer Academy is a wonderful way to decide if medicine or veterinary medicine is your calling and it is a great introduction to the University and all that it offers to its students."
Both high school and college students' experience is further enhanced through several adventurous and educational off-campus excursions, including snorkeling, rainforest hiking, beach activities, a Rhum Runner dinner cruise, and tours of the Island's town and marketplace. Participants are eligible to receive college credit through the School of Arts and Sciences from participation in lectures and clinical practicals.
