St. George's University Medical School Graduates Obtain Record Number of North American Residency Positions

GRENADA, West Indies, Oct. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- St. George's University School of Medicine 2013 graduates have achieved a record number of first-year US residency posts, marking the third year in a row the University placed more doctors into first year U.S. residency posts than any other medical school in the world.

To date, 794 graduates have secured residency programs throughout the United States, in 43 of the 50 states, in 19 different specialties. In addition to the 22 Canadian graduates who secured spots in Canada, many Canadian graduates obtained U.S. residency positions.

"For three years in a row, St. George's University has placed more doctors into first-year U.S. residency positions than any other medical school in the world," said Charles R. Modica, Chancellor of St. George's University. "Many of them take posts in family and internal medicine, meeting the American Medical Association's call for more primary care doctors."

While most SGU graduates take posts in family and internal medicine, meeting the American Medical Association's call for more primary care doctors, this year's graduates also moved into specialties and subspecialties that include emergency medicine, surgery, psychology, pediatrics, gynecology and anesthesiology at teaching hospitals from Harvard and Yale to Georgetown, Columbia and the Mayo Clinic.

Among this year's matches is Michael Melin, who began his anesthesiology residency at the University of Washington School of Medicine this summer. Mr. Melin grew up 15-20 minutes from the UW campus and earned his bachelor's degree from nearby University of Puget Sound.

"Matching at the University of Washington really was a dream come true," said Mr. Melin, who pegged UW as his top choice. "It is really nice to go home back west."

SGU students also matched in programs located in three Canadian provinces, including Winnipeg native Catherine Murray, who obtained a highly competitive diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Ottawa through the Canadian Resident Matching Service. Catherine completed three radiology electives and clinical rotations at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.

"It's exciting to be back to Canada and going to a great program," Ms. Murray said. "I was told that radiology was very competitive, but felt that I was competitive enough. I felt very comfortable leaving Grenada with my knowledge base, and I think SGU students make a good impression wherever they go."
