SRI International Licenses EMERALD Network Intrusion Detection Patents to IBM
MENLO PARK, Calif., March 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SRI International and IBM announced today that they have entered into a license agreement under which SRI will non-exclusively license to IBM SRI's "EMERALD" network intrusion detection patents. The patents relate to sophisticated network security technology originally developed by SRI for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency – popularly known as DARPA – in the late 1990s. The financial terms of the license were not disclosed.
"SRI is gratified that IBM has chosen to license the EMERALD technology," said William Mark, vice president of SRI's Information and Computer Sciences Division. "As a nonprofit research institute, SRI's public benefit mission, as well as its long-term financial security, depends on its ability to transition technologies to the marketplace. The current license to IBM, as well as the EMERALD licenses we entered into with Symantec Corporation last year, further demonstrates the importance of SRI's network intrusion detection architecture to the world's leading computer security firms."
