As election nears, Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility to convene thought leaders from the disciplines of faith, policy and media to discuss public-private sector's role in supporting the common good.
NEW YORK, Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Members and friends of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility will once again gather at Bridgewaters at the South Street Seaport for ICCR's annual special event on Thursday, October 4th. This year's theme, Valuing Questions, Questioning Values, goes to the heart of ICCR members' long-term work to promote corporate responsibility by integrating the values of justice and sustainability into business decisions. But with the heated presidential campaign as a backdrop, a robust discussion of values and their place in our lives is both timely and critical.
Fresh from her rousing reception at the Democratic National Convention Sr. Simone Campbell, Executive Director of NETWORK, a Catholic social justice lobby, and organizer of this summer's "Nuns on the Bus" tour will be joining us as a speaker. Sr. Simone is a religious leader, attorney and poet who advocates on issues of peace-building, immigration reform, healthcare and economic justice. In recognition of the advocacy of Catholic women religious in support of the Affordable Care Act, President Obama invited Sr. Simone to the ceremony celebrating its signing into law.
ICCR is also pleased to host Bob Edgar, President and CEO of Common Cause, a nonprofit organization that advocates for clean elections and campaign finance reform as a featured speaker. As a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mr. Edgar's keen insights regarding corporate influence in both our government and political process are certain to evoke a lively Q&A with the audience. He will appear in Bill Moyer's documentary, The United States of ALEC this weekend on PBS.
Our moderator for the afternoon's discussion will be Randy Cohen, creator and host of the Person Place Thing radio program on public radio. As writer of the New York Times' The Ethicist column, Mr. Cohen offered readers advice on their personal and professional ethical dilemmas for over 12 years. His new book, Be Good: How to Navigate the Ethics of Everything, was recently published by Chronicle.
At this year's event, ICCR will also be honoring longtime member Sr. Patricia Marshall, SBS, winner of the 2012 Legacy Award, for her unflagging commitment to human rights. For decades Sr. Pat espoused and expanded ICCR's work to address inequality by advocating for board diversity and equal opportunity on behalf of the Indigenous and African American communities and by working to break the glass ceiling for women.
ICCR's Valuing Questions, Questioning Values event will be held at Bridgewaters at the South Street Seaport this Thursday, October 4th. Registration opens at 2:30pm and the program begins promptly at 3:30 followed by a reception. For more information visit www.iccr.org.
