Spring Lake, NJ, Selects TimberTech Decking to Rebuild Boardwalk Destroyed By Hurricane Sandy
WILMINGTON, Ohio, Jan. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Spring Lake, NJ, Borough Council has selected TimberTech planks to rebuild the two-mile Spring Lake boardwalk, which is the longest non-commercial boardwalk in New Jersey. The Spring Lake boardwalk was completely destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. Spring Lake is a popular seaside beach destination, hosting hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. The job consists of an estimated 30 truckloads of 16 ft. TimberTech planks in Grey, a color that blends in nicely with the seaside environment.
"We were already using TimberTech for the shower platforms here and our Public Works staff and engineer said it's actually a better choice for the boardwalk than what we had before," said W. Bryan Dempsey, Borough Administrator, Spring Lake. "It has a sturdier feel and should stand up to the heavy foot traffic and beachfront weather," he said. "It also looks very natural and the color blends in with the grays of the beach environment." The TimberTech planks are being supplied to Spring Lake by Jaeger Lumber based in Union, NJ, with shore locations in Belmar and Point Pleasant.
TimberTech Docksider™ is a composite decking material engineered for beachfront environments, standing up to sun, sea spray and sand. Designed for wear and tear, with splinter-free comfort and resistance to warping and rot, it is a larger profile than typical decking and can span 24 inches from the center of one structural joist to the other. In addition, the Grey color and patented VertiGrain™ surface pattern have the natural look of wood, without its problems. It is already in use at several other New Jersey shore locations.
"In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, we are honored to have TimberTech lend a hand in bringing New Jersey's boardwalks back," said Kevin Brennan, VP Sales & Marketing, TimberTech. "We hope that by getting these icons of the shore back up and running, it will lift the spirits of New Jersey residents and tourists this spring." TimberTech, a leading alternative deck and rail manufacturer since the mid-1990s, is based in Wilmington, Ohio.
The project will be completed in three phases with the intention of getting the boardwalk operational by Memorial Day weekend 2013, the first big beach weekend for the Jersey shore. The initial phase will start at the South Pavilion and work its way North. The project includes re-building the boardwalk's entire understructure and then installing approximately 25,000 TimberTech deck boards.
