Spot Helps Redefine the Pediatric Office of the Future

And the parents will be handed a report which they can pass along to their eye doctor when they go for the full vision test.

Spot enables the pediatrician to have consistent and objective vision screening results from each child. And children will not be able to cheat Spot.

"Using the eye chart in the past, some children would find out ahead of time the letters across the line they will be asked to read and just recite those letters to pass the test," said Zeug, explaining the lengths some children will go in order to avoid wearing glasses or contacts.  "Or they will squint to get past it. When they are in school, they seem to know when they have to squint harder to see the blackboard. At their age, they just don't realize that it's important to get an accurate screening for their vision health and future."

New Vision Screening Standard

The American Academy of Opthalmology recommends that during childhood, babies up to age 2 should have vision screenings during regular pediatric visits, and screenings every one or two years from ages 3 to 19.  Spot is equally effective for pre-verbal, pre-school and school age children, including young adults.

In as long as it takes to snap a finger, Spot can identify the most common vision issues that affect learning in school-age children.  A quick screening is able to detect nearsightedness (myopia), blurred vision (astigmatism), farsightedness (hyperopia) and amblyopic conditions.  Amblyopia is the loss or lack of development of central vision in one eye that is unrelated to any eye health problem and is not correctable with lenses.  Amblyopia affects 1 in 50 children and must be identified at an early age in order to correct a child's vision.
