Spot Helps Redefine the Pediatric Office of the Future
New device to be displayed at American Academy of Pediatrics Conference in Boston
LAKE MARY, Fla., Oct. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- PediaVision announced today that the company is working with pediatric offices throughout the United States to increase their efficiency and income through the introduction of Spot, a new, quick and mobile screening device that will help redefine the pediatric office of the future.
Tenafly Pediatrics, a six-facility pediatrics center in New Jersey, is a model of the efficiencies and income generated through the incorporation of Spot into the practice. Tenafly will be introducing six Spot devices to be used by the doctors and staff.
"It's so quick and easy to use," said Tom Zeug, practice manager for Tenafly Pediatrics. "Our staff currently uses the PediaVision screener, which they like, but Spot is even quicker and more advanced, which they will appreciate. It literally takes one second to screen a patient, provides accurate data and it's very simple to train our staff to use it."
Zeug finds that the mobility of Spot will also be very beneficial for the staff at Tenafly.
"It's a light, hand-held device with no wires attached to it, so we can move from exam room to exam room for screening patients," said Zeug, who is certain patients will like Spot as well, because it so quick and easy. "The beauty of Spot is it's convenient for every age and much faster for the medical staff, providing a complete vision screening. And the parents will be handed a report which they can pass along to their eye doctor when they go for the full vision test.
"On the financial side, we like how the cost is structured so we are able to offer it to more people without the financial risks."
Spot enables the pediatrician to have consistent and objective vision screening results from each child. And children will not be able to cheat Spot.
"Using the eye chart in the past, some children would find out ahead of time the letters across the line they will be asked to read and just recite those letters to pass the test," said Zeug, explaining the lengths some children will go in order to avoid wearing glasses or contacts. "Or they will squint to get past it. When they are in school, they seem to know when they have to squint harder to see the blackboard. At their age, they just don't realize that it's important to get an accurate screening for their vision health and future."
AAP Conference
Pediatricians can put Spot through a trial run for themselves at the American Academy of Pediatrics Conference in Boston this weekend (Oct. 15-18). PediaVision will be displaying the new device at the AAP Pediatric Office of the Future Booth (#1464). Interested parties should contact PediaVision's Vice President, Jeff Mortensen ([email protected]), to learn how to acquire Spot vision.
New Vision Screening Standard
The American Academy of Opthalmology recommends that during childhood, babies up to age 2 should have vision screenings during regular pediatric visits, and screenings every one or two years from ages 3 to 19. Spot is equally effective for pre-verbal, pre-school and school age children, including young adults.
In as long as it takes to snap a finger, Spot can identify the most common vision issues that affect learning in school-age children. A quick screening is able to detect nearsightedness (myopia), blurred vision (astigmatism), farsightedness (hyperopia) and amblyopic conditions. Amblyopia is the loss or lack of development of central vision in one eye that is unrelated to any eye health problem and is not correctable with lenses. Amblyopia affects 1 in 50 children and must be identified at an early age in order to correct a child's vision.
"There have been several reports from ophthalmologists saying Spot has been able to catch amblyopia," said Zeug. "That is so important, because amblyopia has to be identified at an early age in order to correct it."
